April 22, 2007 - WHITE ROCK: Environmental awareness is something we are passionate about at Choices Markets. As part of our continuing environmental initiative, every year we take the time to recognize Earth Day at all of our store locations. On this day, we provide information to consumers about the many steps they can take towards the ultimate goal of living sustainability.

Choices Markets' South Surrey location hosted a huge Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 22. This event featured a wide variety of free samples of environmentally friendly products, door prizes, a wild salmon BBQ and information about recycling, composting and other ways to reduce your impact on the environment.

A total of $667.61 was raised during our Earth Day events and was donated to "Birds on the Bay". Thank you to all those who helped contribute.

Pennies for the PeacePennies for the Peace

July 3, 2006 - WHITE ROCK: This summer the South Surrey location of Choices Recycling Centre will launch “Pennies for the Peace” which will benefit Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation.

Currently, Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation is one of several local charities that the clientele of Choices Recycling can donate their recycling refunds to. Each month the total dollars raised through this newly established program is directed to the Foundation and used to help purchase priority medical equipment for Peace Arch Hospital.

“Choices Recycling is committed to preserving the environment and to supporting the work of local charities” says Choices Recycling Centre Manager, Gary Allan. He goes onto say “We hope over time our customers will see that bringing their recycling to our centre is not only good for the environment, but also a convenient way to support the causes that fund important programs and services within our community – like Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation”.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Choices has chosen to support our Foundation” stated Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation Executive Director, Jackie Smith. “Our community has supported a long tradition of giving. This includes the support of local businesses that fundraise on our behalf – in the end it is our entire community that benefits from improved healthcare”.

Grocery Store Celebrates Earth Day with a Garbage Party

April 19, 2006 - VANCOUVER: How is British Columbia's most environmentally friendly grocery store celebrating Earth Day on Saturday April 22? Just ask Mark Vickars, C.E.O. of Choices White Rock in South Surrey, "Choices Markets' mandate is respect for the environment, so we thought let's show our commitment to not only the environment but to the local White Rock community and host a 'Garbage-A-Thon', everything you always wanted to know about garbage, where it goes, how to reduce, recycle and reuse and learn more about being a better environmental citizen. On Saturday April 22 starting bright and early at 9:00 am, Choices staff and local residents will be teaming up with Pitch-In Canada to pick-up trash in and around the store and from there, all trash collected will go through a step-by-step selection process illustrating what happens to garbage after it is collected. Kids are encouraged to attend and learn the ABC's of recycling. Trash collected will be fed into Choices' very own Recyclosaurus that gobbles up garbage destined for Choice's White Rock's on-premise recycling center.

• GroTek will showcase a one-of-kind high efficiency natural system that acts as a portable green house for propagating flowers, plants and herbs, perfect for small spaces
• Sample an array of citrus based highly effective environmentally cleansers
• Organics are not just good for you, they are good for the environment with practices such as crop rotation and better tillage, come hear why organics is a better choice for you and Mother Nature
• Store tours will be highlighting the multitude of environmental and energy-friendly "choices' that were implemented during the construction of Choices White Rock such as clay floor tiles instead of petrochemical; HVAC system utilizes heat generated from the refrigerators to heat the store; temperature sensors in all freezers and coolers that allow for continuous monitoring to operate at optimum energy efficiency and much more.
